Back in 2016 we headed over to LA WebFest, where we had some nominations for the first season of our online series A Shared House. While there we met two dead-set legends — being as Aussie as possible here — in the forms of Luke Goodall and Marc Gallagher.
They do sketch comedy and a bunch of other writing, and we all got on like a house on fire.; creative people you want to work with at the earliest opportunity. In late 2017 when they said they were popping up to Sydney for work, I asked if there were any scripts at all they could do while they were here. They had one that’d work.
As a director, I’ve predominantly worked on my own scripts — the most significant departure so far being Staying the Night, premiered at Byron Bay Film Festival — and it was great to show up and let the talent go nuts. I worked with DP Bradley Cody, pushing to get that interrogation feel — sitting Goodall under a redhead in a west-facing room on a summer day helped.
Comedy is serious business, and watching how Luke and Marc worked with comedian Frenchy was great. Analysing lines, figuring out what is and isn’t working, spitballing and improvising. So often this is the part of comedy that isn’t appreciated; we go through the same process as drama, just toward a different end.
The sketch will go live tonight as part of Goodall & Gallagher’s 8-part online series Antisocial.
