What a way to start 2019!

Projects on the boil, and the announcement of our short film, Staying the Night having its Sydney premiere at the Queer Screen Mardis Gras Film Festival. After premiering at the Byron Bay Film Festival in October, we are ecstatic the film has received the nod from Queer Screen. For the Writer, Alex Beauman, this has been a precious acknowledgement of what he set out to achieve. An excerpt from his Writer’s Statement:

“Coming out as gay has been one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life. I grew up in an accepting household; there were no religious or ideological beliefs threatening my safety. Nevertheless, the fear of living honestly was paralysing. My conceptualisation of what it was like to come out was informed entirely through these films. They overwhelmingly depicted the coming out process as traumatic, violent, and sometimes deadly.

Staying the Night was born out of a want to create greater diversity in the coming out narrative.”

For me this is a wonderful thing to see come to fruition. As I’ve written before I have felt incredibly grateful to be involved in the film — at first as a writing consultant and then as Director — the collaboration has been magnificent. Being a part of Queer Screen’s run of nine film for the My Queer Career section of their festival is a humbling sign that we managed to forge something that stands up to Alex’s intentions. That isn’t hard to do, and it was a true journey with Georgia producing, our phenomenal cast and crew bringing it to life and our beloved editors, Stewart and Lily, who truly helped to set the final draft in stone.

Do come along. Tickets can be purchased via this link. We’d love to see you there!
